A strong tropical wave is moving into the Eastern Caribbean, bringing the potential for heavy rainfall, flooding, and gusty winds across several islands. Meteorologist Brian Shields provided a detailed update on the system, its current impacts, and what residents should watch in the coming days.

Current Situation

  • Fairon: A storm system currently to the east of Bermuda, tracking northeast, and not expected to pose a direct threat to land.
  • Eastern Caribbean Wave: The larger concern is a tropical wave carrying significant rainfall and thunderstorms into Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada, St. Lucia, Martinique, and Dominica.

While the system is not yet a named storm, rainfall totals could exceed 100 mm (4 inches) in some areas, leading to flooding and mudslides.

Development Chances

Shields noted that short-term development into a tropical depression or tropical storm is possible, but the chances remain low to moderate.

  • American, European, and Canadian models: Show little to no development.
  • ICON model: Suggests possible tropical depression or tropical storm formation in the western Caribbean or southern Gulf of Mexico later this week.

If the wave does strengthen, the next name on the list is Gabrielle.

Areas to Watch Closely

  • This Week (Sun–Tue): Heavy rain and flooding possible across Barbados, Grenada, Dominica, St. Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, Martinique, and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
  • Midweek (Wed–Fri): Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic may see impacts.
  • Late Week: Warm waters in the western Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico could fuel further development near the Yucatan Peninsula, Honduras, and Belize.

Why It Matters

Even without official storm classification, flooding, landslides, and strong squalls can cause significant damage. Residents across the Caribbean and Gulf are urged to monitor updates and prepare for possible disruptions.
